2025 Protein Cereal Review: The 12 Best (and Worst) Options for Taste, Macros, and Ingredients

A personal trainer stands in a kitchen behind a counter displaying 12 boxes of high-protein cereals. Text on the image reads "Low Calorie High Protein Cereal Review: 12 Cereals. Taste Macros Ingredients.

Cereal is one of those nostalgic comfort foods that most of us grew up loving—and, if you’re anything like me, you still enjoy it. The good news? Thanks to advancements in food science, you can now find protein-packed cereals that taste great and support your nutrition goals.

In this review, I’m breaking down 12 of the most popular protein cereals on the market in 2025. I’ll cover:

  • Macros: Do they pass the “Protein Test”?
  • Ingredients: Clean or questionable?
  • Taste: The real deciding factor.

Let’s get into it.

What’s the “Protein Test”?

Take the number of grams of protein and add a zero to it. If the cereal has that number of calories or fewer, it passes. For example: 18g of protein → ≤180 calories.

1. Ghost Protein Cereal

  • Calories: 170
  • Protein: 18g ✅ Passes the protein test
  • Fiber: 1g
  • Protein Source: Milk concentrate (bioavailable)
  • Sweetener: Sucralose
  • Seed Oil: Yes

Taste: Phenomenal. Really close to classic cereal, especially the peanut butter flavor. A bit soft at the end but otherwise excellent.

Verdict: Great taste. Great macros. Recommend.

2. Catalina Crunch

  • Calories: 110
  • Protein: 11g ✅
  • Fiber: 9g
  • Fat: 5g (4g from seed oil)
  • Protein Source: Plant-based

Taste: Very good, though slightly less sweet than Ghost. Slight aftertaste (erythritol), which some find metallic.

Verdict: Amazing macros. Good taste. Solid option.

3. Magic Spoon

  • Calories: 140
  • Protein: 13g ❌
  • Fiber: 2g
  • Protein Source: Milk protein blend
  • Fat Source: Avocado & sunflower oil

Taste: Chocolate flavor was bland and disappointing.

Verdict: Not worth it. Macros aren’t great, and taste doesn’t deliver.

4. Three Wishes

  • Calories: 130
  • Protein: 8g ❌
  • Fiber: 3g
  • Protein Source: Pea protein
  • Ingredients: Very clean—chickpea, tapioca, monk fruit

Taste: Marshmallow flavor nailed it. Better than Magic Spoon.

⚠️ Verdict: Tastes great, but the macros just don’t cut it.

5. Legion

  • Calories: 170
  • Protein: 17g ✅
  • Fiber: 7g
  • Fat: 6g saturated
  • Price: ~$10/box

Taste: Chocolate was underwhelming for the price.

⚠️ Verdict: Great macros, but expensive and doesn’t taste good enough to justify it.

6. Truly

  • Calories: 170
  • Protein: 18g ✅
  • Fiber: 5g
  • Saturated Fat: 2g
  • Ingredients: Very clean

Taste: Chocolate peanut butter was delicious. Not quite as tasty as Ghost, but still top tier.

Verdict: Best all-around macros and ingredients. One of the top picks.

7. Premier Protein Cereal

  • Calories: 180
  • Protein: 20g ✅
  • Fiber: 2g
  • Protein Source: Wheat protein isolate (not fully bioavailable)

Taste: Not good. Hard pass.

Verdict: Poor ingredient quality. Half the protein isn’t even usable by your body.

8. Wheaties Protein

  • Calories: 270
  • Protein: 22g ❌
  • Fiber: 6g
  • Fat: 10g (4g saturated)
  • Protein Source: Soy and wheat

Taste: Surprisingly good, but more like “healthy cereal” than comfort food.

Verdict: Ingredients and bioavailability are poor. Skip.

9. Ratio Protein Cereal

  • Calories: 160
  • Protein: 10g ❌
  • Fiber: 6g
  • Protein Source: Soy (only 70% bioavailable)

Taste: Maple Almond Crunch—no way.

Verdict: Poor macros, bad taste, and weak ingredients.

10. Wholesome Provisions

  • Calories: 130
  • Protein: 15g ✅
  • Fiber: 3g
  • Packaging: Individually portioned
  • Ingredients: Long list, but clean

Taste: Mid-tier. Not amazing, not terrible.

Verdict: Great macros and clean ingredients. Good for dieting.

11. WonderSlim

  • Calories: 110–120
  • Protein: Varies by flavor, but ✅ passes
  • Fiber: 2–4g
  • Packaging: Individually portioned

Taste: Chocolate peanut butter was not good.

Verdict: Nice macros, poor flavor. Not worth buying.

12. Ezekiel Cereal (Cinnamon Raisin)

  • Calories: 180
  • Protein: 7g ❌
  • Fiber: 6g
  • Fat: 1g
  • Ingredients: Very clean

Taste: If you like Grape Nuts or bran cereal, you might like this. Not a comfort food.

Verdict: Too expensive. Weak macros. Hard pass.

Final Verdict: Top 3 Recommendations

If you’re shopping for a protein cereal that balances taste, macros, and ingredients, these are the top picks:

  1. Ghost – Best flavor
  2. Catalina Crunch – Best macros and great taste
  3. Truly – Cleanest ingredients and excellent macros

My Personal Go-To?

Catalina Crunch is my pick. Great macros, high fiber, and it tastes great enough to scratch that cereal itch.
